In August 2026, a key legal act of the European Union comes into force – the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), i.e. Regulation (EU) 2025/40. This regulation aims to significantly reduce the environmental impact of packaging by promoting a circular economy, reducing waste, and minimising hazardous substances. ♻️
One of the most important elements of the PPWR is the restriction on the presence of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in food contact packaging. From 12 August 2026, food packaging may not be placed on the EU market if it exceeds the specified PFAS concentration limits (including 25 ppb for a single substance, 250 ppb for the sum, and 50 ppm for total fluorine content). 🧪
Why is this important?
PFAS, known as “forever chemicals”, are persistent in the environment and can accumulate in living organisms. The new regulations introduce strict requirements regarding hazardous substances, recyclability, recycled content, and traceability. ⚠️
Companies that do not comply with the PPWR risk being excluded from the European market. ❌
